Turmeric Mylk Elixir

This is your “golden milk” elixir that everyone is talking about and popping up on menus at cafes across all cities. You can turn this tumeric milk beverage into something known as “moon milk” with the addition of ashwagandha powder. Moon milk is a new-age term given to hot milk with superfoods that help promote rest and sleep and for this reason, it is recommended to be drunk at bedtime.

The key ingredient in this “golden milk” is turmeric, a well-known East Indian spice used in many South Asian dishes and responsible for the vivid yellow colour in curries and Indian foods. Turmeric is a potent anti-inflammatory and helps reduce pain and inflammation. It is fat-soluble and therefore is best absorbed with a meal containing some form of fat. If you are using it for therapeutic purposes, you do have to take high doses and it is best in divided doses for maximum benefit. There are many supplements on the market and it is best to work with a naturopathic doctor or healthcare professional to determine the right dose and brand of supplement for you. Also, working with an ND or other professional makes sure there won’t be any interactions with your other medications because it is a herb and can interact with a few other medications.

Turmeric mylk elixir “golden Milk” Recipe

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 cup unsweetened almond or coconut milk

  • 1-2 tsp turmeric powder

  • 1-2 tsp coconut oil

  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon powder*

  • 1/2 tsp ground cardamom*

  • 1/4 tsp ginger powder*

  • 1 tsp unpasteurized honey (if you want some sweetness)

  • 1 tsp ashwagandha powder (for sleep)

    * you can substitute an East Indian chai masala mix for the cinnamon, cardamom, and ginger powders

METHOD:

  1. Add all the ingredients in a saucepan and heat on low-medium heat until coconut oil is melted and milk is a bold yellow colour and warm and steaming. Don't let it boil or else the milk will precipitate and look gross (especially non-dairy milk).

  2. Enjoy as a perfect hot drink before bed as a replacement for black tea or coffee!
