Bulletproof Coffee

Up your coffee game in the mornings and go bulletproof rather than a simple black cup of Joe. ‘Bulletproof’ means that you are adding a healthy fat to your coffee, most notably coconut oil, ghee, or MCT oil. This can provide you with some extra energy because fats provide 9kcal/g of fat. That means more energy than you would get from a gram of carbohydrates or protein (4kcal/g each from protein and carbs). The healthy fat may also curb some of the jittery-ness that you may get from caffeine. PLUS if you follow intermittent fasting and find that there are some days when you are so tired and have low energy in the morning that you feel like you need to eat something and break your fast early…Try this instead! Healthy fats don’t raise insulin and the main purpose of not eating during the fasting phase is so you don’t raise insulin. That makes bulletproof coffee intermittent fasting-friendly. The caveat is that it can only have fat and no other macronutrients (carbs or protein) so avocados don’t count.

You can purchase MCT oil as well as health food stores

Ghee can be found at South Asian grocery stores but these days, most supermarkets have it too. It is clarified butter, meaning, lactose and most of the milk proteins (casein and whey) are removed and you are left with the fat so it is generally ok for people who have a milk protein sensitivity or who are lactose intolerant. Just as a caution, there may be trace amounts of casein so if you have a severe milk protein allergy or sensitivity, I urge you to avoid ghee and grass-fed butter and stick to only the coconut oil.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 cup black coffee (french press, freshly ground)

  • 1-2 tsp coconut oil/ghee/MCT oil

METHOD:

  1. Add the coconut oil, MCT oil and/or ghee to your black coffee.

  2. Pour it into a blender and blend until coffee is blended, frothy and "creamy".

  3. Pour into a cup or your coffee mug.

  4. Enjoy!
